Most of these descriptions are created by very clever marketing people who are trying very hard to sell you their product.

Microfiber Cloth for Cars Buyer's Guide

In this section we attempt to explain what to look for if you are contemplating buying these cloths, and also how to look after them so as they will last you for a long time.

What Are Microfiber Cloths Really Made From?

Almost every single cloth being sold on the market is made from a polyester base. The actual microfiber is then sewn or weaved into this polyester base and this fiber is known as polyamide. Almost every cloth is also imported and these are made in countries like Korea, China, Pakistan, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The country importing them then sets guidelines with reference to the quality they are willing to accept. That can get quite complex but it is really just a set of acceptable standards for safety and for quality.

These have now been made for years. When first produced these were

80/20 vs 70/30 Fiber Quality

This is one of the most discussed things you will see on the countless car forums on the Internet. Some vehicle owners can get into really heated debates when discussing the 80%/20% versus the 70%/30% quality of microfiber cloths and towels. Let us see if we can help explain this as it may also help you make a better buying decision.

As we mentioned earlier, microfiber cloths are made by blending two man made fibers:

  1. Polyester - This man made fabric is widely used in the clothing industry, and is also used for these cloths as the fibers have characteristics that include softness, toughness, durability, absorption, and filtering capabilities.I have included links to Wikipedia in the resources section of this article if you want to find out more about this particular man made fiber
  2. Polyamide - These can get wonderfully technical, but in short, this is a synthetic man made very soft fiber. It is used because of its softness and the fact that it will not scratch paint on cars. We have included links to Wikipedia in the resources section of this article if you want to find out more about this particular mad mane fiber

The bottom line is both these fabrics are soft, and as such they do not scratch the surface paint on your car. Some cloths, even though they feel soft to the touch, actually cause swirl marks to the clear coat finish of a car. You usually can see these under direct sunlight and they never look good.

Now you may see some or all of the following when it comes to buying these cloths:

  • 85/15
  • 80/20
  • 75/25
  • 70/30

This refers to the balance between polyester and polyamide. The larger number refers to the amount of polyester. The general consensus is that the 70/30 is the softest and the 85/15 is the hardest type of cloth. All microfiber cloths are soft but the 70/30 is the softest of all of these types.

Car care manufacturers tend to place a lot of emphasis on these numbers, and the general public simply take this as being genuine. It is a good enough guide but it is not strictly true. There are a number of other factors to consider, rather then the relentless focus on thes etwo numbers. Those factors include:

  • The quality of the yarn being used
  • The tightness of the weave
  • The quality of the construction
  • The quality controls of the manufacturer

The US government regulations state that any company importing these label their imported products with the country of origin and the content of the product. This content refers to the polyester to polyamide ratio. What is very interesting is that these declarations do not have to be 100% accurate.

The reality is that on any factory production run, there will be a +/- 2% difference in fiber content. When the ratio is so small that means there is little to no perceivable difference for the end user, like you and me. In addition to that, a manufacturer will label the towels for a brand in what ever manner the buyer requests. (within certain limits of course)
